Cryptogram Daily
A daily cryptogram puzzle for iPhone. One hand-picked quote each morning, no pop-ups, no timers, no account.
We read every message. To help us work out what went wrong, please include your iPhone model and your iOS version (Settings > General > About), together with what you did just before the problem appeared. The version number shown on the App Store listing is useful as well.
Q might stand for A, and X might stand for E.ZIT appears twice and you decide Z is T, then I is almost certainly H and T is almost certainly E. You did not guess THE — you deduced it.The first few letters are given to you when the puzzle opens. Difficulty is set by how long the quote is, and harder puzzles hand out fewer free letters: three on Easy, two on Medium, one on Hard.
No. There are no timers, no countdowns, and no penalty for putting the puzzle down and coming back later. Your progress is saved automatically and restored exactly where you left it.
Two free hints every day. They reset each day, so there is nothing to run out of permanently — if you use both today, there will be two more tomorrow.
A hint reveals one cipher-to-letter mapping that can be proved from the letters you already have, rather than an arbitrary guess. That is why taking a hint still teaches you something about how the puzzle works instead of just handing you the answer.
Completely. The whole quote library ships inside the app, and the daily puzzle is calculated from your device’s date. Aeroplane mode makes no difference. This version makes no network requests at all.
No. There is no sign-up, no login, no email address to enter, and no password to remember. Open the app and play.
Version 1.0 has no advertising of any kind — no banners, no interstitials, nothing that plays before a puzzle opens.
Because in this version there is no video to watch. A later version may add the option to watch a short, entirely voluntary video to earn one extra hint. It would never be required, and it would never interrupt a puzzle.
Yes. A new quote is released at midnight in your local time. Because it is derived from the date, every player sees the same puzzle on the same day — without a server being involved.
Not within a year. The library holds more than 350 quotes, and the daily rotation is shuffled so that consecutive days are never adjacent in the library, and so the last puzzle of one full cycle is never the first puzzle of the next. Beyond a year, quotes do come around again.
Practice mode gives you the entire quote library, so you can solve as many puzzles as you like instead of waiting for tomorrow. You can filter by difficulty, and solving a practice puzzle never affects your daily streak. Hints come from the same two-a-day allowance as the daily puzzle, so a practice puzzle can use up the hints you were saving for today.
Every quote is taken verbatim from a work in the public domain, along with traditional proverbs — Austen, Dickens, Melville, Twain, Conan Doyle, Thoreau, Wilde, Carroll, Stoker, Shelley and others. Nothing is paraphrased or rewritten, the author is recorded with each quote, and the app claims no copyright over these texts.
Entirely on your own iPhone, inside the app’s private storage. It is never uploaded anywhere. Deleting the app permanently deletes your progress and statistics. Moving to a new phone will carry your progress over only if your device backup includes app data.
Use “Reset all progress” on the Stats screen. To erase absolutely everything at once, delete the app from your device.
Please report it. Send the quote text and, if you can, the date it appeared, and it will be corrected in the next update.
First, close the app completely and reopen it — progress is saved continuously, so nothing will be lost. If the problem continues, please email the details above, including your iPhone model and iOS version.
Correct. Cryptogram Daily is a single-player puzzle. There is no messaging, no sharing to a feed, no web browser inside the app, and no way for one user to contact another. This is why the app is rated 4+.
Email us and we will get back to you. Reporting your iPhone model and iOS version helps a lot.
